ABOUT COCS
Most often, outdoor furniture is not very chic. Often incongruous with the designed interiors. Actually a pity...I often thought...
Inspired by the rough body cult, the sexy bodies on the beaches of Ipanema, the sound of the sea, sand grains and the glittering sun. COCS stands for uncompromising, timeless aesthetics. With a hint of handmade eccentrics.
COCS symbolizes unexcited and transparent appearances. With focus on the environment. This with strength and presence. Decisive through materiality and quality in detail.
COC is originally designed as an outdoor furniture that was created years ago as an experiment. Concrete as an extremely heavy material, usually awkward to transport. But gladly used and a beautiful aesthetic dimension.
During Covid and the impossibility of travel, the idea was revisited. The urge for sea, sand and good humor. The subsequent "turn of time" made the project more concrete and a prototype becomes a product. An object that can be easily dismantled. With the heaviness of concrete. At the same time easy to transport to all corners of the world.
Metaphorically connecting. I am especially pleased with the CNC milled connectors. Most often, even in very high quality furniture, standard screws are used. Not very nice. In the combination of genuine craftsmanship and a timeless look are created modular objects for all times. And generations.
The dynamics of horizontal and vertical development in our society
COCS stands metaphorically for these two currents. COC for horizontal development, COCOT for vertical development. PUB symbolises the effort required for both currents. The connectors as a binding link of both directions.
In our ever-changing society, two types of development are particularly defining: horizontal and vertical development. These two concepts capture the progress and changes taking place in various aspects of our society. We will look at the meaning and interplay of horizontal and vertical development and examine their impact on our society.
Horizontal development refers to expansion and spread in a flat plane. It represents expansion in breadth and diversity as new possibilities, ideas and concepts emerge. An example of this is technological innovation, where new products, services and technologies are developed to improve daily life. This horizontal development allows for greater diversity and choice, opens up new markets and promotes competition.
In contrast, vertical development refers to progress in a hierarchical or ascending dimension. This is about striving higher, reaching new levels of excellence and complexity. Vertical development manifests itself in areas such as education, science and personal growth. By expanding our knowledge, improving our skills and developing on a personal level, we reach a deeper level of understanding and consciousness.
These two types of development are interrelated and complement each other. Horizontal development creates the basis for vertical development by opening up new possibilities and perspectives. It broadens our horizons and gives us the tools to grow vertically. On the other hand, vertical development gives meaning and direction to horizontal development. It gives a deeper dimension and purpose to our diversity and breadth.
The effects of this development dynamic are manifold. At the societal level, horizontal development enables greater social and cultural diversity. It promotes innovation, creativity and collaboration. Vertical development, on the other hand, promotes personal growth and the pursuit of excellence, leading to higher quality work, education and cultural development.
However, these developments can also bring challenges. Horizontal development can lead to fragmentation and overload if there are too many options and too much information. Vertical development can lead to inequalities when access to education and development opportunities is limited. Therefore, it is important to find a balance between horizontal and vertical development in order to create an equitable and sustainable society.
The dynamics between horizontal and vertical development shape our society in different ways. Both are indispensable and play a crucial role in the progress and growth of our society. Horizontal development opens up new opportunities and promotes diversity, while vertical development leads to deepening and improvement.
To fully realise the potential of this development dynamic, we as a society need to take certain steps. First, we should ensure that access to education and development is guaranteed for all. Everyone should have the opportunity to develop their skills and reach their full potential. This requires an equitable distribution of resources and opportunities to reduce social inequalities.
Furthermore, it is important to foster a culture of curiosity, learning and creative thinking. Horizontal development is nurtured by openness to new ideas and perspectives. By valuing diversity and actively seeking to learn from each other, we can foster innovation and collaboration.
At the same time, we should support vertical development by providing incentives for personal growth. Individuals should be encouraged to continuously expand their skills and knowledge. This can be done through targeted training programmes, mentoring and sharing best practices.
Finally, we should realise that the balance between horizontal and vertical development is crucial. An over-emphasis on horizontal development can lead to superficiality and a lack of depth, while an over-emphasis on vertical development can lead to an elitist society where inequalities increase.
In an ideal society, horizontal and vertical development will be in harmony. There will be a wide diversity of possibilities and ideas guided by a deeper understanding and a higher purpose. This requires continuous reflection and adaptation of our systems and values to ensure that development takes place in a sustainable and inclusive way.
Overall, the dynamic between horizontal and vertical development is a fundamental aspect of our society. By recognising its importance and taking targeted action, we can build a more equitable, diverse and progressive society. It is up to all of us to promote this development dynamic and use it for the benefit of all.
